The Working Group 2024 has planned and organised the Inaugural Forum on 1 July 2024 at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland. The group will also launch the Philippine Studies Network Aotearoa New Zealand or PH Studies Network NZ.
Co-organised and sponsored by the Te Whare Marea Tātari Kaupapa | Public Policy Institute (PPI) of the University of Auckland and the Technical Assistance and Management Services New Zealand Limited (TeAMSNZ), the inaugural forum is a timely response to the government’s commitment to deepen New Zealand’s engagement with Southeast Asia and more specifically, to advance its relationship with the Philippines – its partner for nearly 60 years.
Dr. Maria Cristina G. Bautista worked with a children’s charity in New Zealand for five years as its programme coordinator for Africa. A trained economist, she completed degrees in London (MSc and PhD) and the Philippines (MA, AB).
Dr. Sarah Jane D. Lipura is a multilingual researcher-practitioner with a doctoral degree in Asian Studies from the University of Auckland (UoA), where she was recipient of the University Doctoral Scholarship, Faculty of Arts Research Grant, and Universitas 21 Mobility Scholarship. MORE
Dr. Harold Aquino holds a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Massey University School of Built Environment and serves as a Professional Teaching Fellow specializing in Disaster Management and Resilience at the University of Auckland. MORE
Joeven R. Castro, a PhD candidate in Communication at the University of Auckland, researches on Filipino teachers’ intermediary functions in crisis communication during COVID-19. MORE
Dr. Gay Marie M. Francisco completed her doctoral studies in Politics and International Relations at University of Auckland (UoA), New Zealand, as a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholar. MORE
Dr. Maileenita Peñalba is the current chairperson of the Department of Economics and Political Science at the University of the Philippines Baguio. MORE
Louise Anne M. Salas is a PhD candidate in Art History at the University of Auckland. Her research titled Women Movement Dwelling explores the works of Filipina and wāhine Māori visual artists, 1970-2000. MORE
