We had an enjoyable storytelling session led by Erickson Maclid, with hands-on activities initiated by the Philippine Studies Network Aotearoa New Zealand. The story Ang Kanin ni Kaka (The Rice of Kaka) encouraged kōrero/kwentuhan about our favourite rice meals and the efforts of farmers who help bring food to our tables. Stories about the origins of rice tell us the cultural importance of rice, and the book The Boy Who Touched Heaven gave us this glimpse. Our 'make stations' included making a Pahiyas headdress ('pahiyas' means to adorn) to touch on the rituals related to harvest, making a clay rice cake, and drawing stories of rice. For merienda/afternoon tea, our participants shared rice-themed snacks, such as puto (steamed rice cake with cheese) and rice crackers! The event was supported by Auckland Council World of Cultures and Ellen Melville Centre.
