This (5th) Pag(m)ulat featured a presentation and a conversation with Professor Roland Tolentino, multi-awarded author, writer, scholar and activist, whose research interests include Philippine literature, popular culture, cinema, and media. The title Kwentong Aotearoa is drawn from Prof Roland’s co-edited publication Kwentong Siyudad (2002), a collection of short stories that dwells on people’s experiences of place, and how place shapes people’s experiences.
Centring Filipino stories grounded in Aotearoa New Zealand and the ways these stories are told, trailblazers Hannah Pia Baral and Marianne Infante were invited to share their experiences crafting stories through different modalities, such as performance, social media, cultural research; to name a few. The event was moderated by Dr Sarah Jane Lipura, co-leader of the Philippine Studies Hub at AUT and whose current research, "Pangangalaga (Care) at Pamilya (Family): Filipinos in Aotearoa New Zealand's Health Sector," is a recipient of a prestigious New Zealand Oral History grant (2025).
